Opus 5.5 costs $4 and $20 respectively. That means Opus costs roughly twice as much at the headline token level.

But that does not mean every Opus task costs exactly twice as much in practice.

The model’s effort level changes how much reasoning it performs and how many tokens it consumes. A cheaper model running at a high effort level can sometimes consume enough additional tokens that its real cost per completed task approaches a more expensive model.

This distinction matters for production systems.

Imagine two models completing the same coding task. Sonnet may have a lower token rate, but if it needs several additional attempts, tool calls or corrections, the apparent saving becomes smaller.

Conversely, if Sonnet completes the task reliably on the first attempt, its lower price becomes much more valuable.

The right metric is therefore not simply:

Price per million tokens

It is:

Cost per successful outcome.

That is one of the most important ideas in this comparison.

It also explains why benchmark tables should not be treated as shopping lists. A model tested at maximum reasoning effort may produce an impressive score while using considerably more compute than a production workflow using a lower setting.

For most users, the best configuration is not necessarily the one with the highest benchmark score. It is the one that delivers the required quality with acceptable latency and cost.

Reasoning and Benchmark Performance

Claude 5.5 Sonnet for everyday tasks

Overall intelligence

The benchmark picture is genuinely close, but Opus 5.5 still has an overall edge at the highest effort levels.

Artificial Analysis currently gives Opus 5.5 a higher Intelligence Index at maximum effort, while Sonnet 5.5 leads on some individual evaluations.

This is important because it demonstrates why saying “Opus is better” without qualification is incomplete.

Sonnet 5.5 can beat Opus on particular tests, especially when the task rewards efficient agentic execution. Opus is stronger when the evaluation rewards deeper reasoning, scientific problem solving or sustained judgment.

The result is a capability distribution rather than a universal ranking.

Coding and Terminal-Bench

Coding is one of the most interesting areas because Sonnet 5.5 has become surprisingly competitive.

Anthropic reports a 70.6% score for Sonnet 5.5 on Terminal-Bench 4.0, compared with 66.4% for Opus 5.5 in the company’s published comparison.

That sounds like a Sonnet victory — and on that benchmark, it is.

But another coding evaluation tells a different story. On FrontierCode 1.1 Main, Opus 5.5 scores 54.4%, compared with 46.2% for Sonnet 5.5 at Max effort.

CursorBench provides another useful signal: Sonnet 5.5 reaches 55.5%, while Opus 5.5 reaches 57.8%.

The lesson is straightforward:

There is no single coding benchmark that completely defines the difference between these models.

Sonnet 5.5 is already strong enough for many coding workflows that traditionally would have pushed users toward Opus.

Opus becomes more attractive when the engineering problem is ambiguous, spans multiple components, requires architectural judgment or has a high cost of failure.

Knowledge work

Knowledge-work benchmarks make the Sonnet 5.5 upgrade particularly interesting. Anthropic reports GDPval-AA scores of 1,844 for Sonnet 5.5 and 1,846 for Opus 5.5.

On AA-Briefcase, the scores are similarly close: 1,811 for Sonnet and 1,822 for Opus. That is a much smaller gap than the model names might suggest.

For structured professional tasks with clear objectives, Sonnet 5.5 can therefore be extremely competitive.

But benchmarks should not be interpreted as proof that the models behave identically.

A clearly defined task with an objective output can favor Sonnet. A vague assignment such as “figure out the best strategy for this complicated business problem and decide what we should do next” gives Opus more opportunity to demonstrate its advantage in judgment.

What benchmark scores don’t tell you

Benchmarks measure specific tasks under specific conditions.

They do not fully capture:

How often a model asks for clarification

How well it handles unclear requirements

Whether it notices a hidden assumption

How much human editing is required

Whether it knows when to stop

How reliably it maintains a plan over many steps

How many retries an agent requires

How useful its explanations are to the person reviewing the work

That is why a good model comparison needs both benchmark evidence and practical task-level evaluation.

Coding: When Sonnet Is Enough and When Opus Pulls Ahead

Claude 5.5 Sonnet vs Claude 5.5 Opus

For everyday development, Sonnet 5.5 is likely to be enough for a surprisingly large percentage of tasks.

Examples include:

Fixing a straightforward bug

Writing unit tests

Explaining unfamiliar code

Converting a function between languages

Refactoring a small module

Writing documentation

Creating SQL queries

Implementing a clearly specified feature

Reviewing routine pull requests

These tasks generally have defined inputs and observable outputs.

The model does not need to decide what the entire project should become. It needs to execute a reasonably clear instruction.

That is exactly where Sonnet 5.5’s speed and lower cost become valuable. Opus 5.5 becomes more compelling as the problem becomes less defined.

Consider a request such as:

“Investigate why our production service intermittently fails under load, identify the root cause across six repositories, propose an architectural fix, implement it and verify that the change doesn’t introduce regressions.”

This is not simply a coding problem.

It involves investigation, hypothesis formation, repository exploration, architecture, implementation and verification.

That kind of long-running workflow gives Opus 5.5 more room to justify its premium.

The same principle applies to code review.

CodeRabbit’s independent evaluation found Sonnet 5.5 caught 6 of 13 known issues in its hardest test set, while its Opus 5.5 testing caught 8 issues at Standard effort and 10 at Max effort.

The sample is small, so it should not be treated as a universal benchmark, but it illustrates the practical distinction: Sonnet can be highly effective for the main review pass, while Opus can be valuable for harder or higher-risk changes.

For development teams, a sensible workflow is therefore:

Sonnet for routine engineering → Opus for difficult exceptions.

Writing, Research and Professional Work

For everyday writing, Sonnet 5.5 is the more obvious choice.

It is well suited to:

Blog drafts

Emails

Editing

Summaries

Content briefs

Social copy

Meeting notes

Documentation

Slide outlines

Spreadsheet-related work

The advantage is not merely price.

Speed matters when writing is iterative. If you are asking an AI to rewrite the same paragraph five different ways, a faster model makes the workflow feel more responsive.

Sonnet 5.5 is also positioned by Anthropic as a model for polished documents, slides and spreadsheets.

Opus 5.5 becomes more useful when writing is part of a larger reasoning problem.

For example, consider the difference between:

“Rewrite this report in a more professional tone.”

and:

“Read these research documents, identify contradictory evidence, determine which conclusions are defensible, explain the uncertainty and prepare an executive recommendation.”

The first is editing.

The second requires research synthesis, judgment and prioritization.

Sonnet can certainly attempt the second task, and its knowledge-work scores show how competitive it has become. But Opus is the more defensible choice when the cost of an incorrect interpretation is high.

For research, neither model should be treated as the final authority. AI output still needs to be checked against primary sources, particularly for statistics, dates, quotations, scientific findings and other claims that matter.

AiZolo’s existing AI research verification workflow makes a similar point: compare model outputs to identify disagreements, then verify important claims against reliable sources rather than treating model agreement as proof.

Speed, Context and API Economics

The context window does not decide this comparison.

Both Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 support a 1M-token context window and a 128K maximum output.

That means a user choosing between the two should not select Opus simply because they need to work with a large document or codebase.

Both models are designed for long-context workloads.

The more important difference is how much intelligence you need to apply to that context.

Sonnet 5.5 has lower latency and lower token pricing.

Opus 5.5 has higher token pricing and moderate comparative latency, but its stronger performance on difficult tasks can reduce the number of failed attempts or corrections required.

The pricing difference is substantial:

Cost

Sonnet 5.5

Opus 5.5

Input / 1M tokens

$2

$4

Output / 1M tokens

$10

$20

Cache read / 1M

$0.20

$0.20

5-minute cache write

$2.50

$5

1-hour cache write

$4

$8

Both models also offer a 50% Batch API discount on input and output.

One interesting detail is that cache reads cost the same for both models.

That matters for long-running workloads with substantial cached context. The model choice still affects the generated output and other token costs, but the cache-read component does not preserve the same 2× price difference.

The same cost-versus-capability trade-off also appears in other model comparisons. For example, our GPT 6 Luna vs GPT 6.1 Sol guide looks at how OpenAI’s models differ in performance, pricing and the types of workloads they are best suited for.

Claude 5.5 Sonnet for Everyday Tasks vs Opus for Complex Work

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="572" data-src="https://aizolo.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Claude-5.5-Sonnet-vs-Claude-5.5-Opus-3-1024x572.jpg" alt="Claude 5.5 Sonnet vs Claude 5.5 Opus" class="wp-image-14075 lazyload" title="" data-srcset="https://aizolo.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Claude-5.5-Sonnet-vs-Claude-5.5-Opus-3-1024x572.jpg 1024w, https://aizolo.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Claude-5.5-Sonnet-vs-Claude-5.5-Opus-3-300x167.jpg 300w, https://aizolo.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Claude-5.5-Sonnet-vs-Claude-5.5-Opus-3-768x429.jpg 768w, https://aizolo.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Claude-5.5-Sonnet-vs-Claude-5.5-Opus-3-150x84.jpg 150w, https://aizolo.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Claude-5.5-Sonnet-vs-Claude-5.5-Opus-3.jpg 1376w" data-sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" src="data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==" style="--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; id="how-do-sonnet-5-5-and-opus-5-5-compare-on-context" class="wp-block-heading">How Do Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 Compare on Context?

Both have a 1M-token context window and 128K standard maximum output.

So context size is not the deciding factor. The more meaningful difference is how much reasoning capability you need when processing that context.

Is Claude Opus 5.5 Worth the Extra Cost?

It can be, particularly when better reasoning reduces failed attempts, retries, human correction or the risk of an incorrect result.

For routine work, however, Sonnet 5.5’s lower price and faster response can provide better overall economics.

Which Is Better for Coding?

Neither wins every coding benchmark.

Sonnet 5.5 is highly competitive on agentic coding and is a strong choice for routine development and high-volume coding workflows. Opus 5.5 is the better fit when coding requires deeper architectural reasoning, difficult debugging or long-running autonomous work.

Which Is Better for Writing?

Sonnet 5.5 is usually the better starting point for everyday writing, editing and content production because it is fast and less expensive.

Opus 5.5 becomes more attractive when writing is part of a complicated reasoning task, such as synthesizing conflicting research or developing a nuanced professional recommendation.

Does Sonnet 5.5 Have the Same Context Window as Opus 5.5?

Yes. Both models have a 1M-token context window and a 128K standard maximum output.

This means users should not choose Opus simply because they need to process a large document or codebase.

Is Sonnet 5.5 Always Cheaper in Practice?

No.

Its published token rates are lower, but actual task cost depends on token consumption, reasoning effort, retries and workflow design.

A high-effort Sonnet task can consume substantially more tokens than a lower-effort task, so production teams should measure cost per completed task rather than relying only on per-token pricing.

Should I Use Sonnet First and Switch to Opus?

For many workflows, yes.

A practical approach is to route clearly defined tasks to Sonnet 5.5 and escalate tasks that fail a predefined quality threshold to Opus 5.5.

This allows teams to reserve the more expensive model for cases where its additional capability actually provides measurable value.

Conclusion

The Claude 5.5 Sonnet vs Claude 5.5 Opus comparison is no longer a simple choice between a “good” model and a “better” model.

Sonnet 5.5 has become capable enough to handle a large amount of professional work at a substantially lower token price. Its performance on coding and knowledge-work evaluations makes it a credible default for everyday and high-volume workloads.

Opus 5.5 still earns its place at the top of the Claude lineup when tasks become difficult, ambiguous, long-running or costly to get wrong.

The smartest approach is therefore not to choose one model permanently.

Use the cheaper model where it meets your quality bar. Escalate when the task requires more judgment.

That turns model selection from a brand preference into an engineering decision: pay for additional reasoning when the task actually benefits from it.

Author

Anshika Verma is a content researcher and writer focused on researching AI tools, models and creator technologies.
